“Is my pet’s weight really something to worry about?”
Myth: A few extra pounds just mean my pet is well-fed and loved!
Truth: Just like people, many pets carry extra weight, and those extra pounds can lead to real health problems. Even being 10% over their ideal weight can increase a pet’s risk for joint pain, diabetes, heart disease, and a shorter life.
Why a Healthy Weight Matters
Obesity (extra body fat) is now the most common health issue seen in dogs and cats.
Studies show that pets who stay at a healthy weight live longer, sometimes up to two years more than those who are overweight.
Extra weight puts strain on joints, the heart, and other organs, making pets more likely to develop arthritis, breathing problems, diabetes, or even certain cancers.
The good news? Weight can be managed. With the right food, exercise, and monitoring, we can help your pet get back to a healthy, comfortable weight.
How We Check Your Pet’s Weight
At Willow Grove, we use something called a Body Condition Score (BCS) to decide if your pet is at a healthy weight.
Here’s what to look for at home:
- You should be able to feel, but not see, your pet’s ribs.
- From above, your pet should have a visible waist.
- From the side, there should be a gentle belly tuck instead of a round belly.
- If you’re not sure, that’s okay! We’re happy to check your pet’s weight and BCS at their next visit and help you make a plan that works.

What You Can Do at Home: Small Changes, Big Difference
🍽️ 1. Feed Smart
Feeding the right food, and the right amount, is the most important step. Avoid free-feeding (keeping food out all day) or giving too many treats.

🚶♀️ 2. Get Moving
- Exercise helps keep pets strong and burns calories.
- Add an extra walk or five minutes of playtime each day.
- Use toys like tug ropes, laser pointers, or food puzzles.
- For senior pets, try gentle indoor play or short walks instead of high-impact activities.
🩺 3. Schedule Regular Wellness Visits
Checking your pet’s weight every six months helps us track progress and make small changes before they become big problems.
We’ll talk about food choices, portion sizes, and safe weight-loss goals during each visit.

👨👩👧👦 4. Get the Whole Family Involved
Everyone plays a part in helping your pet stay healthy!
💬 Talk about what snacks and table scraps are off-limits.
🎯 Keep treats small and count them as part of daily calories.
🧍♀️ Let kids or other family members take turns walking or playing with your pet.
🐢 5. Take It Slow
Healthy weight loss takes time. Fast weight loss can be dangerous, especially for cats.
We’ll help you set realistic goals and support you every step of the way.
